Florida teen shares amoeba survival story

Survivor Sebastian DeLeon to speak at summit

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida teen who contracted a deadly amoeba and lived to tell about it spoke on Friday at an amoeba summit in Orlando.

Doctors and specialists from around the country gathered in Orlando for the summit, which is hosted by Florida Hospital.

Sebastian DeLeon, who is from South Florida, was treated at Florida Hospital Orlando last month. Sebastian is the fourth person in the past 50 years to survive the infection.

"I'm thankful for you guys and God for saving me," Sebastian said.

When asked by a doctor how it felt to be one of the survivors, Sebastian said, "Well, I didn't know I had it until I woke up from a coma. I thought I had a migraine."

Friday's summit included presentations on early detection and treatment, as well as the latest advances in research.

Sebastian and his mother credit the doctors at Florida Hospital for saving his life. They were able to make a quick diagnosis and get him the right medication.
