Florida power workers recognized for service, hard work

State lawmakers to observe 'Florida Lineworker Appreciation Day'

Lineworkers with the state's largest power provider are thankful to be recognized this week for their hard work.
The Florida Legislature will observe Friday as "Florida Lineworker Appreciation Day."

Tuesday, Florida Power & Light invited News 6 to their training site in Melbourne to get a behind-the-scenes look into the daily responsibilities of the company's 1,600 lineworkers.

"There is a little risk involved but it's a fulfilling job. I like what I do. I can't see myself doing anything different," said lineworker Dave Schmidt.

Schmidt says when he began working with FPL he was afraid of heights.

Now, 19 years into his career, being elevated high above in a bucket truck is second nature.

"There's a breeze up here so on a hot day like this you'd rather be up here than down on the ground," he said. "I'm still doing it, still climbing."

FPL lineworkers serve more than 10,000,000 Floridians.

"Whether it be a day like today or a stormy situation, these men and women are dedicated to providing power to our customers, nearly half the state," said FPL spokesman Bill Orlove.

"To have a job that you love as much as you do and then to be honored for it on a day like today, it's a heartwarming feeling. I love it. It's great," said Schmidt.
