Florida removes interstate call boxes

State will save $1M on call box removal

With most people now having a cellphone, the Florida Department of Transportation decided to start getting rid of highway call boxes.

By January, call boxes will not be present at each mile marker of Florida's Interstates, with the exception of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay.

Costing about $200,000 for the entire state, almost all of the call boxes have been already removed.

With the removal of these boxes, the state now expects to save $1 million dollars a year.
