Intruder shot, killed by Flagler resident ID'd

2nd culprit turns himself in, Flagler deputies say

PALM COAST, Fla. – A Flagler County resident shot and killed one of two intruders early Wednesday, and the other turned himself in, authorities said.

The fatal shooting was reported just after 2 a.m. on Frank Place in Palm Coast.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, two gunmen entered the home, but a resident grabbed a gun and shot one of them. That man, identified as Victor James Betty, 28, died at the scene, deputies said.

The second intruder ran away and was not found during a search. Deputies said they were able to identify the man as Carl Devore, 19, but before they could locate, him he surrendered at the Flagler County Sheriff's Office Operations Center.

FCSO said they obtained a warrant charging Devore with second-degree felony murder and attempted home invasion robbery. He is being held without bail.

At least two adults and a child were inside the home. They were not injured.

Deputies said Devore and Betty went into the home looking for marijuana. Authorities said it appears the resident was in the right under state law to defend himself, but prosecutors will decide if charges will be filed.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office at 386-313-4911 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 888-277-8477.
