ANTHONY, Fla. – A 66-year-old Marion County woman was arrested Monday night on allegations of shooting and killing her neighbor's cat because the animal was getting into her trash.

Marion County sheriff's deputies said Sherry Wilemon, of Anthony, was arrested on charges of aggravated animal cruelty.

Deputies said Wilemon appeared to be hiding behind a tree when she shot the cat twice with a pellet gun and left the animal to die in a driveway.  Wilemon said she fired the gun as a way to scare off the cat, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Wilemon's son buried the cat in the back yard, deputies said.

"Due to the excessive suffering and the cruel death that the cat endured, the investigator placed Wilemon under arrest for aggravated animal cruelty and transported her to the Marion County Jail," said Judge Cochran, Marion County sheriff's spokesman.
