2 charged after 2 malnourished horses are euthanized

North Florida couple facing animal cruelty charges

MELROSE, Fla. - A north Florida couple is facing animal cruelty charges after two of their three malnourished horses had to be euthanized.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says Randy James Curtis and Mary Elizabeth Curtis of Melrose were arrested Friday in an ongoing investigation into the treatment of their horses.

The sheriff's office tells The Florida Times-Union that the investigation started in July when the second horse was euthanized.

The first horse was euthanized in April when animal control officers found it severely underweight.

Jail records Saturday showed that each Curtis is being held on $500,000 bond.

It wasn't known whether either had an attorney.
