ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – A large sinkhole has forced a family to evacuate their north Florida home.
The sinkhole, located at 11958 Southwest 5th Avenue in Alachua County, started overnight Friday, according to Robin Matheny, the homeowner.
On Sunday, Linda Rush and her grandson came to see the sinkhole estimated to be 80 by 40 feet.
"Is it going to spread? Is it going to continue to open up?" said Rush.
The sinkhole's only victims have been things left in the back yard and a lot of grass. A shed was also seen teetering close to the sinkhole's edge.
The Matheny family has lived in the home for more than 30 years.
"Well, I went down about 6 o'clock yesterday where the sinkhole is and was grilling to the right of the steps and now my grill is in the bottom of the sinkhole," said Matheny.
"It's a hole in the ground. A big hole, but a hole in the ground," said Lloyd Vipperman, who lives across the street.
Vipperman said he's not concerned about his property.
"Sinkholes are a part of living in Florida. Kind of like snakes. You gotta understand they're around and insure against them and do the best you can."
Scientists have said it's unsafe for the family to live there. The insurance company is investigating since the family moved out.
So far, there have been no injuries.
