Bomb squad searches abandoned rental car in Brevard County

Saw and shotgun shells found inside

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A Brevard County sheriff's bomb squad robot searched over a rental car with a mysterious box inside after it was found abandoned at a gas station near State Road 528 and U.S. 1, Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports.

The sheriff's office was notified by a rental company earlier this afternoon, prompting deputies to locate the blue Nissan Altima parked next to a BP Gas Station, deputies reported.

"It was left abandoned. We don't believe it's stolen but it's still under investigation," said Maria Fernez, spokeswoman for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies immediately shut down the gas station and the northbound lanes of U.S.. 1 along with the west bound lanes of the 528 Causeway.

Investigators say they later found a saw inside of a box, along with shotgun rounds in the trunk of the car.

It's not known yet where the car came from or how long it was at the gas station.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the sheriff's office at 321-633-7162.
