SHARPES, Fla. – A 5-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after being hit by a pickup truck late Monday night in Brevard County.
Troopers say Louis Villegas has special needs, and got away from his parents in a parking lot along U.S. 1 near Camp Road in Sharpes. As they were looking for him, the boy wandered into the northbound lanes of U.S. 1.

Troopers say the driver of the truck, 64-year-old Timm Eri from Cocoa, tried to swerve to avoid the boy but could not.
Villegas was flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando in critical condition.
Troopers say their investigation into the accident is ongoing.
