Brevard elementary student accused of firing pellet gun at classmates

11-year-old now facing felony charges

PALM BAY, Fla. – A 11-year-old Brevard County student already suspended for bringing a bullet to school, faces a court date next month after Palm Bay police said he turned up at a bus stop wearing camouflage and firing an Airsoft gun at classmates.

The students were not injured, but police said the targeted individuals did not tell authorities about the incident until five days later.

According to Local 6 news partner Florida Today, the Meadowlane Intermediate Elementary School student was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center this past Wednesday on felony charges of aggravated assault and trespassing on school property with a weapon.

Police said on Nov. 6 the juvenile asked a teacher if he could bring a bullet to the West Melbourne school to show classmates, reports show.

The next day, the boy defied the teacher's directive and brought the bullet to school, prompting officials to suspend the Palm Bay boy for three days.

On Nov. 9, police said the boy, who was dressed in camouflage, waited for the school bus to stop at the intersection of Essen and Banks streets in Palm Bay and fired several shots from an Airsoft gun.

Airsoft guns are non-lethal, sometimes realistic replicas of firearms and typically use plastic pellets, according to manufacturer websites.

The students scattered as the boy continued shooting and aiming at them for nearly 15 minutes, reports show. The students later reported the incident to school officials last Wednesday, reports show.

The boy will face a hearing before a juvenile judge next month.
