Tar balls wash up on Brevard County beaches

Coast Guard responds to globs of tar on the sand

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Tar balls washing up on beaches from Cocoa Beach to Melbourne Beach have garnered responses from the Coast Guard and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Contractors said Thursday that more than 50 pounds of tar has been picked up.

Officials said the tar balls are not the result of any reported oil spills, and an investigation into the cause is underway.

Beachgoers are advised to avoid the tar balls.

The Coast Guard said this isn't the first time this has happened, with sightings dating back several years.

Contact the Coast Guard at 1-800-424-8802 if you see any tar balls.
