HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Police say a South Florida man is accused of slapping his wife during a fight over the 2012 presidential election.

Peter Schwartz, 74, told Broward County Judge John "Jay" Hurley on Wednesday that the argument with his wife started after the couple had gone out to dinner.

Schwartz told the judge his wife said, "you're like my mother, you like Romney."

The South Florida SunSentinel reports Schwartz told police he slapped his wife on the face. She, then told police she ran from her husband because he was yelling at her about the candidates.

During Schwartz's first court appearance Wednesday, he was ordered by the judge to stay away from his wife until the case is handed over to another judge.

The newspaper says Schwartz and his wife are listed as having no party affiliation.
