ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida Highway Patrol troopers ticketed almost 50 drivers along Interstate 4 in their holiday speed trap crackdown on Thanksgiving morning alone.
Troopers said they set up a speed trap on I-4 near Lee Road where they ticketed 49 people going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit. The largest ticket was to a driver that was going 90 mph in a 50 mph zone.
As in previous years, troopers announced exactly where they'll be this holiday season. On Friday, they'll be on I-4 in Volusia County just beyond the St. Johns River Bridge. Troopers will set up speed traps in two shifts, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, they'll be along the southbound lanes of State Road 417 near Osceola Parkway during daylight hours.
"I would avoid it. I'd go the back roads. If I have to go to Sanford, I'm going the back roads. I'm going 17-92, not I-4," said Suzanne Stevens, who like a lot of drivers has a good reason why she avoids highway traffic on holidays. "They need to slow down," she said.
Troopers have said in the past, they're not doing this to write tickets, they're trying to save lives. Last Thanksgiving, troopers said crashes killed 30 people in Florida.
