Florida Senator files bill to rollback huge increases in vehicle registration fees

Fees went up in 2009 to help with budget shortfall

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A Florida lawmaker has filed a bill that would roll back big increases in fees to register your car.

The fees were increased in 2009 to help the state deal with a multimillion dollar budget shortfall.

But Senate Appropriations Chair Joe Negron (R-Stuart) has filed legislation that would roll those fees back. Negron says now that the state has a projected budget surplus, the costs to register your car should go back down.

The move would cost the state about $230 million in annual revenue.

A similar bill in the legislature this year was not passed. Lawmakers will debate the new bill in the next legislative session in the spring.
