ORLANDO, Fla. - Florida's work force gained more than 23,000 jobs in the month of August, ranking it second among all states according to a new U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Florida ranked behind only Texas among all states for biggest increase over the month in job creation.
According to the report, Florida's August job numbers of 23,200 continued a trend that saw the state experience positive job growth month to month for 11 of the past 14 months, and positive annual job growth for 25 consecutive months.
The state's August total of more than 28,000 new private sector jobs was the "highest over-the-month change since April 2011." According to the Department of Economic Opportunity, the state's unemployment rate of 8.8 percent was "1.7 percentage points lower than the year-ago rate of 10.5 percent and 2.3 percentage points lower than December 2010." The DEO reports Florida has gained 153,000 private sector jobs during that same span.
