CLERMONT, Fla. - Clermont police report at least five homes in newer subdivisions across the city have been burglarized through decorative windows near front doors.
Police say the thieves are smashing the small, decorative windows next to front doors then reaching into the home and unlocking the door to gain access to house.
The break-ins have been reported at homes in a nine-mile stretch off U.S. 27 from Rob Roy Drive to Barbados Loop.
Three of the break-ins happened during mid-morning on Friday, including one in the 2000 block of Hartwood Pines Way.
"Oh my God. It's scary," said Claudia Miranda, who lives in the Hartwood Pines Subdivision. "Knowing that someone broke into your house is not a good thing."
Police say in that case, someone smashed through the front window, unlocked the front door, then stole a Sony camera and four CD players.
"It makes me feel scared. I mean it could happen to us anytime," said Edward Dennisson, who lives right next door to one of the burglarized homes.
After finding out that three homes were hit on Friday, Dennisson purchased all new locks. At about $20 a piece, the deadbolts require a key even from the inside.
"Just put it up and the only way you can unlock it from the inside or anywhere is with a key," said Dennisson.
Local 6 first reported on the break-ins in late April when someone broke the window to a home on Rob Roy Drive.
In that case, three Fish and Wildlife officer badges were stolen.
Just days later and blocks away another home was broken into on Disston Ave. Fortunately, it was vacant, but the broken window is still boarded up.
In addition to the home on Hartwood Pines Way, windows were also smashed at a home on the 1000 block of Sanderling Drive and the 4000 block of Barbados Loop on Friday.
Back in Hartwood Pines, the Homeowners Association is now warning residents at a meeting this week, if they see anything suspicious, call police immediately.
