The attack happened just after 5:15 p.m. in the 300 block of Savage Way, officers said.

The 3-year-old boy went to go visit another dog at the same neighbor’s house when the pit bull bit him. The child was opening the gate to the backyard at the time, assisted by his mother, police said.

The boy is expected to survive, according to the hospital. He is listed as stable. Medical procedures remain in progress, St. Joseph’s Hospital staffers said.

Groveland officers and Lake County Sheriff's Office Animal Services are investigating the case.
