London man attempts rowing from Miami to New York

Row 18 hours per day, sleep rowboat

MIAMI - A London man is attempting to row from Miami to New York.

Lewis Colam doesn't have a lot of rowing experience, but he says he wanted to do something more adventurous than the desk job he left behind in England. He's inspired by explorers James Cook and Sir Francis Drake, and by TV personality and survivalist Bear Grylls.

Colam plans to start his 1,400-mile journey Saturday.

Colam tells the Sun Sentinel that he plans to row for up to 18 hours a day and to sleep in his custom-made 15-foot rowboat.

Colam has dedicated his journey to raising money for Alzheimer's research. He'll blog about the trip at .
