Burglar alarm alerts homeowners of fire

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A fire ignited at an Orange County home Thursday afternoon that killed several of the homeowner's pets.

The homeowners of the two-story home on Maple Creek Drive were not at the house during the fire, but were alerted by their alarm company that their burglar alarm was going off. The homeowners contacted a neighbor to check on the house, and the neighbor spotted smoke coming from a second floor window and called 911.

Firefighters successfully rescued one cat from the fire but the remaining pets, 3 cats, 1 pet snake and 1 turtle did not survive the fire. No civilians or firefighters were injured.

According to the news release, the cause of the fire was not immediately known and the state fire marshal will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause.

American Red Cross will assist the family, consisting of two adults and 1 child, with temporary lodging.
