Halloween noose decoration sparks controversy

Apopka woman says decoration reminds her of slavery

APOPKA, Fla. – A woman is angry about a Halloween noose decoration outside an Apopka store.

Evelyn Simmon told Local 6 the decoration showing a woman hanging from a noose outside Kathy's Produce on U.S. Highway 441 is a brutal reminder of the days of slavery.

"I see a noose and a black face and a wig, and that didn't sit well with me," Simmons told Local 6.

Simmons said she was horrified with what she saw at the produce store that she visited with her 4-year-old grandson to buy corn.

Employees at the store defended the decoration.

They said it was just a scary, dark green mask in a pink dress -- something that's been part of their Halloween display for years.

But members of a church located next to the store agreed that the decoration might be too strong for parents driving by with young kids.
