Deputies: Motorist fleeing DUI checkpoint struck deputy

Deputy fires shots at driver, Donald Geraghty

ST. CLOUD, Fla. – Sheriff's deputies were conducting a safety and DUI sobriety checkpoint in Osceola County when a motorist fled the area and struck a deputy with his vehicle, officials said.

Donald Geraghty, 51, is facing several charges including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer during a DUI safety checkpoint.

The deputy shot at the vehicle multiple times, but Geraghty kept going, officials said. Deputies were able to stop Geraghty on Canoe Creek Creek Road in St. Cloud by blocking in his car, forcing him to come to a crashing halt.

Geraghty tried to flee on foot after getting out of his car, but a K-9 eventually took him down.

Early Sunday morning Geraghty, who was driving with a suspended license, was released from the hospital with minor injuries and booked into the Osceola County Jail, deputies said.

Deputies said Geraghty was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, as well as fleeing and eluding.

The deputy was transported to Osceola Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
