BARTOW, Fla. - A Polk County sheriff's deputy and a southwest Florida mother have been charged after the woman's child was left in a hot car and died.
Adriana Alicia Espinosa was charged Wednesday after authorities say she left her 1-year-old in the car with the motor off, but the fan on.
The baby went into distress and died. Espinosa is charged with manslaughter and child neglect causing great bodily harm.
Polk County Sheriff's detention deputy Christopher Eiland was charged Thursday after authorities say he knew about the events leading up to the baby's death but didn't report it. His charges include failure to report suspected child abuse.
Eiland was hired last June and was still on probationary status. The 22-year-old resigned after his arrest. The relationship between Eiland and Espinosa wasn't clear.
