MIAMI - Police say a shoplifting suspect drowned in a canal near Miami's Dadeland Mall.

The man ran out of the mall after security notified a Miami-Dade police officer who was working in the mall on Saturday evening.

The man jumped into the canal running behind the mall, according to police.

The officer lost sight of the suspect and called divers to the scene. His body was pulled from the canal.

Police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta says that despite some witness accounts, the suspect was not zapped by a stun gun before he ran.

His name hasn't been released.
