Boil water notice issued in Volusia County affects 82,000 customers

11 Volusia County schools affected, officials say

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A boil water notice was issued in Volusia County after a water line was damaged.

The notice covers Port Orange, Daytona Beach Shores (south of Thames Ave.), Wilbur-by-the-Sea and Ponce Inlet, according to Port Orange Public Utilities officials.

A total of 82,000 customers have been affected by the alert, including 56,000 Port Orange residents. Water has been restored to the area and they are working on repairing the water line. The alert could last 36 to 48 hours since bacteria must be sampled.

Around 1:20 p.m., the Port Orange Public Utilities Water Plant noticed a drop in water pressure levels. They located the problem, which was damage to a water line on Nova Road, south of Herbert Street.

Residents were encouraged to bring cooking or drinking water to a rolling boil for one minute before use.

Water pressure has been restored, and when testing has been completed a rescinding notice will be released and normal water usage can resume.

Eleven Volusia County schools will also be affected by the boil water notice, according to Volusia County Schools.

Since they will boil any water that is needed for meals, lunches will not be affected. The water fountains were covered so they cannot be used and 5-gallon coolers of bottled water was provided, officials said.

The first water sample will be taken at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and the second will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Once those results come back, it will be determined if the water is drinkable again.
