DeLAND, Fla. – Officials broke ground on the Sunrail commuter project, which will link Osceola, Orange, Seminole and Volusia counties on Monday.
The DeBary station, located just west of Interstate 4, will be the first of two Sunrail stations in Volusia County. Construction started back in January on the first phase, which runs 32 miles from Volusia County to Sand Lake Road in Orange County. It will stop at 12 stations along the way.
Volusia County's commitment to the project will cost about $80 million over the span of 30 years.
Congressman John Mica said the project will add thousands of jobs across the state.
"this is not the end of the line, this is only the beginning of a vision to go north, south, east and west," Mica said at the ceremony.
Phase 2, which adds a DeLand station, will be built in two sections. The north section runs from DeBary to DeLand and the south section from Sand Lake Road through Kissimmee to Poinciana.
Phase 2 construction is expected to begin in 2014. Sunrail trains are expected to be up and running around 2014.
