Teen arrested after shining laser pointer into Volusia sheriff's helicopter

Andrew Decker

HOLLY HILL, Fla. – A Holly Hill teen has been arrested on New Year's Day after deputies say he shined a green laser into the cockpit of a Volusia County Sheriff's Office helicopter.

Andrew Decker, 18, has been charged with pointing a laser light at a driver/pilot after the VCSO pilot said Decker shined a green laser into the cockpit multiple times as they were flying in the area of Hammock Drive.

When deputies asked Decker why he was shining the light, Decker said he was "just shining the trees" and that he was "just seeing if the laser would go that high and it did."

Decker also said he thought the laser was "cool" and learned about laser pointers in Boy Scouts.

Deputies said pointing a laser pointer at pilots can blind them and cause serious damage to their eyes.

Decker was arrested on felony charges and taken to Volusia County jail just after midnight, where he bonded out.
