Windows 8 to debut on Thursday

New system is radical remake of Windows

NEW YORK - Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, will unveil a new version of Windows on Thursday.

Windows 8 is designed to run on PCs, tablets, and smartphones.

The new operating system is a radical remake of Windows -- the biggest in 17 years.

It comes at a time when Microsoft needs to show that it still has the ability to be a major player in the future of computing.
