Flu claims life of new mother in Brevard
Woman gave birth in December
A woman who gave birth last month and was on life support from the flu has passed away, becoming Brevard’s second fatality from the virus this season, according to a hospital representative.
The latest victim, who was in her mid-20s, had been hospitalized at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.
Dr. Heidar Heshmati, director of the county Health Department, said the woman had some flu-like symptoms during the late end of her pregnancy and then after she had the baby in December, the flu hit her in a critical way.
The woman died on Sunday night. Her baby is fine.
The first fatality, a woman in her mid- to late 30s, died January 5, also at Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center, according to health officials.
The conditions of two other people in Brevard hospitals who are on life support from influenza have not changed, Local 6 confirmed with Dr. Heshmati.
