MICCO, Fla. – Florida Power & Light is constructing a solar power plant on 460 acres in South Brevard County that's raising concerns for a woman living there.
Rebecca Jennings, a resident of Fleming Grant Road, spoke with News 6 about the noise and the dust she said is traveling across the street and into her home.
"You can hear how loud it is," Jennings said. "This is what I hear in my living room."
The solar center is an $116 million project that will produce enough energy to power 15,000 homes. It's one of eight new solar plants FPL is building statewide, according to the power company.
"I'm not happy and I know a lot of the neighbors aren't happy, not to mention the dust," Jennings said.
The unhappy neighbor told News 6 she believes the construction is threatening animals.
"I used to see the wildlife going in there but now I see them running for their lives," Jennings said.
FPL told News 6 Monday that crews are not harming the environment and while an orange grove was destroyed, it was dying anyway.
"Throughout this process, we've been communicating with our neighbors in the Barefoot Bay area," FPL spokeswoman Alys Daly said.
Jennings said she received a letter from FPL that included a phone number and email address she could contact if she wanted to talk to a construction manager about her concerns.
Jennings said she did not reach out because she did not think it would make a difference.
A FPL spokesperson said if Jennings wants her house cleaned, arrangements will be made at no charge to her.
Construction of the solar plant is expected to be finished by March 2018.
