The fuel hydrant system erupted at gate 6, but all fuel systems were shut down as a precaution, airport officials said. Some of the systems were back up and running at 9 a.m.

OIA officials said nearly 20 flights were delayed because of the spill, with delays ranging from 30 minutes to two hours. Jet Blue, American Airlines and Frontier were among the airlines that experienced delays. No flights were canceled.

Officials said the spill did not impact the ramp or the area around it.

An employee for a subcontractor was taken to Florida hospital East with unknown injuries, the spokeswoman said.
