Girl made school-shooting threat to seem 'cool,' deputies say

12-year-old student arrested

DUNNELLON, Fla. – A 12-year-old girl told deputies she wrote a threat about a school shooting at Dunnellon Middle School because she wanted her classmates to think she was cool, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

"I planned a school shooting. It is going to happen on 3-29-17," the message read.

The note was found written in a textbook at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and the administration launched an investigation.

Deputies said there was no evidence that the child had any intent to harm her peers, but they still beefed up security at the middle school Wednesday.

The student admitted to writing the threat so she would seem cool. She has been arrested and charged with disruption of a school function, which is a second-degree misdemeanor.
