Group honors Orlando police with treats, decorations

Initiative part of National Police Week

ORLANDO, Fla. – Families of law enforcement officers across Central Florida came together Wednesday to give Orlando police headquarters a welcome makeover.

As part of National Police Week, officers were surprised with special treats, decorations and words of encouragement from local schoolchildren.

"They deserve so much appreciation, so much thanks," said Dani Thompson, administrator of Florida LEO, Fire and EMS Wives.

Thompson created Florida LEO, Fire and EMS Wives in 2013 to support not only the men and women behind the badges, but their families.

"These men and women are faced with very dangerous and extreme situations on a daily basis," said Thompson.

Jessica Anderson knows all too well the hazards that officers face. Her husband, Orlando police Officer William Anderson, was severely injured during a traffic stop in July 2015.

"I think we're on 310 days into his recovery, and it's not any easier than it was the first day," Jessica Anderson said.

Overwhelmed by the support that her family has received, Anderson said it was important for her to show how much she appreciates everyone who wears the badge.

"We hope it puts a smile on their face.  We hope it makes them realize that we are thankful for them every day," Anderson said.

It was a message received loud and clear by the officers.

"I love all of the signs and balloons and the kids. It's just a great feeling to have them come out and support us," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said.
