Gunman crashes during police chase in Clermont, officials say

4 vehicles involved in wreck

CLERMONT, Fla. – A man shot another person and then caused a four-car wreck Tuesday evening while leading police on a chase, the Clermont Police Department said.

"We responded to a shooting and we got a vehicle description from the caller, and we believe we saw the vehicle and initiated (a) pursuit," Sgt. Malcolm Draper said.

The man, identified Wednesday as Sean Michael Mills, 26, was seen firing a gun from a silver Nissan Sentra, police said. Three other cars were involved when Mills crashed the Nissan near State Road 50 and Hancock Road.

"We got a call for an adult male that was shot," Draper said. "We did recover a firearm from one of the vehicles involved in this collision, so we're not looking for any more suspects."

The people hurt in the crash were all adults, and they were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The situation started at 6:05 p.m., when Clermont police learned of the shooting in the 1000 block of Disston Avenue. A caller told officers that a victim was lying in a driveway, suffering from a gunshot wound, police said.

Witnesses at the scene were murmuring the name "Sean Mills" as first responders tended to the man who had been shot, the arrest report said. Police said witnesses were reluctant to provide information, but they believe that Mills was in his car talking to the victim, who was outside the vehicle, and then shot him.

An officer who arrived at the shooting scene spotted the car and tried to pull over the driver, police said.

Mills, whom police called a “violent felon,” sped off, but crashed withing minutes.

Mills was flown to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he is in critical condition. The shooting victim, a 32-year-old man, is also at ORMC.

Police said the wreck could have been deadly, and the investigation that followed the collision prompted road closures and traffic to be diverted for several hours.

Charges are pending in the shooting and the crash.
