Gunman in standoff at CVS on SR 436 taken into custody

Traffic impacted as deputies investigate

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Traffic was impacted for over four hours near the CVS in Apopka due to a standoff situation involving an armed man.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said officers responded to a 911 emergency call in reference to a man with a gun and possible explosive devices. 

Officers responded and found the suspect with multiple firearms in the CVS parking lot at the intersection of State Road 436 and Piedmont Wekiva Road.

Deputies said they were unaware of man’s intentions and that he did not make any direct threats.

Apopka Police Department told News 6 that the man had a lot of guns.

A witness at the scene said deputies were using a megaphone to tell the man to put his hands down and take off his jacket.

The OCSO SWAT deputies took down the man-- using two non-lethal soft rounds after a four-hour long standoff.

It's unknown what kind of non-lethal measures were used.

Deputies identified the man as Charles Warren Jr., 50, of Apopka and said he's mentally disabled.

The man was transported to Florida South for psychological evaluation.

A BB gun was found in Warren's waistband, but no explosive devices were recovered. 

No charges have been filed at this time.

No one was injured in the standoff. 

Apopka Police Department, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, The Florida Highway Patrol, and Orange County Fire Rescue also responded to the scene.

State Road 436 at Piedmont Wekiva Road was closed for hours while deputies investigated.
