Gunshots, police pursuit, threats lead to Melbourne standoff

Man accused of threatening neighbors

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 31-year-old man accused of threatening his neighbors and firing a gun into the air led to a police standoff in Melbourne, officials said.

The standoff took place Friday morning in the 4100 block of Edward Street in Melbourne.

Police told News 6 around 7 a.m. that the standoff ended when it was discovered that the man was not inside the home. A gun, however, was recovered in the house, police said.

The incident began around 6 p.m. Thursday when neighbors reported that a man was driving a vehicle and shooting a gun. Police said an investigation shows that the man also threatened his neighbors.

When officers arrived, the man was not in the area, police said.

About three hours later, the man returned to the neighborhood but was again gone when officers were called, police said.

His vehicle was discovered and a police pursuit began, but officers decided to stop following him because he was driving recklessly, police said.

The man then returned home, and the standoff began around 10 p.m. Thursday.

No injuries were reported.
