FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Eleven days after Hurricane Matthew blew a massive tree into a Holly Hill home, a family is now on track to get help from FEMA.
Vernon Vanduyne said he has been sleeping in a tent, while his wife and five grandchildren stay with family because his home was destroyed.
Wednesday morning, FEMA came out to survey the damage for individual assistance qualifications.
President Obama did not approve individual disaster assistance for Volusia and Flagler Counties until Tuesday. Governor Scott urged him to include Brevard County, but it had not been approved by Wednesday afternoon.
Individual assistance would help families with temporary housing and funding to rebuild. Small businesses could be eligible for loans. Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis and could take up to two weeks to resolve.
Vanduyne expects to have to bulldoze his home, they lost everything inside and damage estimates are more than $100,000. His family is now trying to arrange to get his young grandchildren, ages 2-7, a stable home and all the essentials they need.
