Homes damaged in vandalism spree in New Smyrna Beach

Damage includes shattered side window, paint splattered on donated garage door

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Paint is splattered across a brand-new donated garage door, on newly installed siding and down the concrete driveway.

It's months of hard work building a house for homeless teens, ruined for the Cudas' Unhooked nonprofit.

"We're going to move on from this, just a small setback," Ray Catheline said.

The damage didn't end there: a side window is shattered, plants are destroyed and rocks were thrown, denting the back door. The nonprofit had plans to open the home in two weeks.

Catheline's hoping the vandals are caught soon.

"Seems like they were just out having a wild night. Hopefully that's the last of it," Catheline said.

All up and down Josephine Street near New Smyrna Beach High School there are complaints of damage. Mailboxes have been knocked over, tires slashed and windows broken. A sign at New Smyrna Beach Apartments had a hole so big one could see through it.

"It looked like someone had thrown something through it, deliberately thrown something through it to damage it," resident Mary Martin said.

Neighbors said the incidents have increased over the last week; it's normally quiet. They're worried things might get worse as summer goes on, and believe it's the work of bored kids.

"It was probably just a bunch of kids out having a good time for themselves," Martin said.

The acts of vandalism are costly for those involved, especially the Cudas house. All the items used to build the house were made possible by donation.
