Houston neighborhood enjoys bizarre peacock invasion

Some say the birds have called the street home for 50 years

HOUSTON – A bizarre bird invasion has a Houston neighborhood abuzz.

Peacocks have descended on the block and the pecking order is clear.

"They're a neighborhood institution down here. We love them," said Lester Baker.

Some say the birds have been around for at least 20 years, others believe it was a half century ago.

The legend is one of the first families in the neighborhood owned just a couple peacocks. The family eventually left, but the peacocks stayed.

Since then, they've multiplied. Neighbors believe there are as many as 40 roaming around the area. Peacocks can produce as many as 30 eggs a year.

For now, the birds are welcome guests. Neighbors say they enjoying watch their technicolor splendor.
