SARASOTA, Fla. - Authorities said 52 people were hurt in multiple, multi-vehicle crashes that shut down part of southbound Interstate 75 for six hours Friday.
Two of the 22 people taken the hospital were listed in critical condition, officials said.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the collisions occurred Friday afternoon near the border between Sarasota and Manatee counties. The crashes resulted in at least seven crashes involving 47 vehicles, according to troopers.
FHP said traffic was diverted onto University Parkway and then allowed to re-enter the interstate on the other side of the overpass.
Authorities said the crashes were caused by heavy rain and driver error, specifically people driving too fast on slick roads.
