I-95 traffic snarled in Brevard County after crash, lightning strike

No injuries reported in either incident, authorities say

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Two separate incidents have Interstate 95 snarled in Brevard County on Wednesday afternoon, with one that was caused by lightning striking a vehicle.

Brevard County Fire Rescue said I-95 southbound was shut down in Mims after a minivan was struck by lightning and caused a fire in the engine compartment. The road has since been reopened and no injuries were reported.

"There was a bang and a flash and that fast the windshield shattered," the driver of the minivan said. "I didn't get hurt at all I juts felt glass bouncing off my arm."

Less than half a mile away on northbound I-95, a crash involving a semi truck had lanes blocked at Exit 200 State Road 406, backing up traffic to Foxlake Road, BCFR said. Injuries have been reported but it's not clear what the severity of the injuries are.
