Man accused of telling Mt. Dora officers 'I hope you die ' like Orlando police officer

Jerome Anthony Burke Jr. set to appear in court on Feb. 14

MT. DORA, Fla. – A Mt. Dora man accused of causing a disturbance at a local food mart is also accused of making threatening remarks to the police officers who arrested him and mentioned killing them like Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton, authorities said.

Officer responded on Jan. 23 to Lil' Sammy’s Food Mart on North Highland Street after they were told by patrons that Jerome Anthony Burke Jr. was causing a disturbance and telling people that he had a gun.

Burke told officers that he did have a gun, police said.

A witness told officers that Burke told him he had a gun, held up his shirt and began walking toward him.
According to the report, Burke told the witness that he would have a motorcycle gang come and kill him.

During his arrest, Burke repeatedly told officers, “I hope you die,” “I want to kill you cops" and “I will remember your faces and stand over your body and shoot you…,” the arrest report said.

After Burke was in custody, he said, "I'll blow your head off " and "I hope you die" eight times, police said.

“I hope you die and get a gunshot wound to the head like that Debra girl from Orlando police,” the report quoted Burke as saying.

Clayton, a 17-year veteran, was killed Jan. 9 by Markeith Loyd after she approached Loyd in a Walmart parking lot, police said.

Loyd was on the run after her death and was apprehended Jan. 17 after a nine-day manhunt.

Burke is charged with damage to property, criminal mischief, threats to law enforcement and breach of peace. He is being held on a $1,500 bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Feb. 14, according to the Lake County Jail’s website.
