Instructor shot, killed inside Winter Garden Crossfit gym

Man shot dead at Crossfit Mosaic on Carter Road

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – An instructor was shot and killed Monday night inside a Winter Garden gym while others who were training watched in horror, according to police.

The man was shot around 6:45 p.m. at CrossFit Mosaic on Carter Road near State Road 429.

According to Winter Garden police Lt. Scott Allen, a man wearing a black hat and black sunglasses entered a fitness room at the gym and shot the instructor, who died at the scene.  Information about the victim, including his name, has not yet been released by police but friends of the instructor tell Local 6 his name is Richard Millsap.

Allen said eight people were training in the gym at the time of the shooting and one of them chased the shooter, who got into a waiting car.

A detailed description of the shooter, getaway driver and vehicle have not been released.

"Whoever the killer was walked into the gym, said, 'Nobody move,' walked up to Richard and shot him dead," said Mosaic Community Church member Jerry Phillips. "Shot him twice and walked out and there was a getaway car, so it was an assassination."

Friends of Millsap say that he remarried a few years ago and has children. They told Local 6 Millsap recently turned around his life and started going to church when he wasn't leading workouts at the gym.

In 2007, Millsap was hanging out at NBA player DeShawn Stevenson's home when someone opened fire, wounding a man. Deputies said no one inside the house, including Millsap would cooperate with the investigation and no arrests were made.

Millsap was also accused of witnessing a rape, but no charges were filed against him.

"Unfortunately sometimes our past does come back for all of us to haunt us, even though he had turned the corner and his life was transformed," Phillips said.

It's not clear if the shooting is tied to Millsap's past or unrelated.
