Investigation into police sergeant with 'Trayvon' targets completed

Port Canaveral police Sgt. Ron King faces termination

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Brevard County Sheriff's Office has completed its investigation into a Port Canaveral police sergeant accused of having shooting targets resembling Trayvon Martin.

"The Port Canaveral Police Chief has sustained various policy violations against Sgt. King and has issued King a notice of intent to terminate his employment," the Canaveral Port Authority said.  "He now has an opportunity to respond to the charges before the Police Chief makes a final determination with respect to any disciplinary action. King also has a right to grieve any disciplinary action in accordance with the Canaveral Port Authority's personnel policies."

Local 6 first reported last year that a manufacturer was producing the targets, which show a silhouette with a hooded sweatshirt holding Skittles and a beverage.  The targets initially sold out two weeks after being posted online.

King, who had been with the Port Canaveral police force for two years, was fired for allegedly having the targets while teaching target practice and offering them to an officer.

"Whether it was his stupidity or his hatred, (this is) not acceptable," Port Authority interim CEO Jim Walsh said in April.

Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in a gated Sanford community last year after purchasing candy and a beverage from a nearby store.  Zimmerman says he shot the unarmed teen in self-defense and was found not guilty on Saturday.

King owns a company in which he offers firearm training and personal safety coaching. He also spent nearly 22 years with the Melbourne Police Department.

Trayvon Martin's family attorney released a statement earlier this year, saying, "It is absolutely reprehensible that a high-ranking member of the Port Canaveral Police, sworn to protect and serve Floridians, would use the image of a dead child as target practice."
