Web Extra: Insurance coverage issues

We encourage consumers to contact the Department of Financial Services (DFS), Division of Consumer Services (Division) whenever they have an insurance coverage issue that they do not understand, need assist with a claim or require communication assistance with their insurance company.  The Division has a professional staff with expertise in all areas of insurance who will respond to the consumer’s request for assistance.

The Division also offers informal alternative dispute resolution programs for Florida consumers on both residential and automobile insurance policies.  If a consumer is unsatisfied with the amount offered by their insurance company to make repairs, they can participant in the Mediation Program offered by the Division.  Mediation allows the consumer face to face interaction with their insurance company and a licensed neutral third party mediator to try to resolve the differences.  The mediator acts to encourage and assist in the resolution of the dispute without dictating the outcome.

If the consumer has a sinkhole claim dispute, the Division offers a sinkhole Neutral Evaluation program which has a neutral third party professional who will review the findings of the insurance company.

The above programs are non-binding; meaning that neither the consumer nor the insurance company are legally obligated to accept the outcome of the mediation conference. The programs are offered in order to help consumers avoid the time consuming and costly legal process.  The Division can be contacted at 1-877-MY-FL-CFO (1-877-693-5236) or on-line at: www.myfloridacfo.com.
