Items stolen from Habitat for Humanity home in Cocoa

Laminate wood kitchen cabinets among items stolen

COCOA, Fla. – Police are looking for the thieves involved in stealing from a Habitat for Humanity home in Cocoa.

"My initial reaction was I hope that it's not true. We have people that have reached a state of hopelessness, that feel it's OK to take advantage of other people," said Site Supervisor Bruce Challender, with Habitat for Humanity.

Challender said he was the last one to lock the property up and when he got there the next day, he immediately knew something was wrong.

"There was nothing but footprints here and tire tracks rolled right up here. They had the back of their vehicle parked right here," Challender said.

He said the thieves stole laminate wood kitchen cabinets, four white interior doors that go to the bedrooms and a power saw.

"The patience and love in these men is incredible and when something like this happens, I can see it in their eyes. It's hard not to take it personally," said Diana Koenig, executive director with Habitat for Humanity.

Organizers said the home is going to a single mother and her three children who have helped with the construction from day one.

"It's unfortunate, obviously. They're building a house for someone in need," said Yvonne Martinez, of Cocoa police. "Because the interior of the structure was under construction, it was difficult to get fingerprints. Plus there's a lot of traffic -- people coming and going from that property."

"We can have as many as 1,000 volunteers working on a house," Koenig said.

Challender said he's nervous one of the volunteers could be responsible.

"I've learned some people come here to check me out to see if they can take something. It's not the first time," Challender said.

The items stolen were worth nearly $5,000, and it will be delayed for at least a month.
