ORLANDO, Fla. – A JetBlue flight attended attempted to smuggle 940 grams of heroin into Orlando International Airport by hiding it under her uniform, according to a criminal complaint.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers on Friday conducted a screening of passengers and JetBlue employees exiting JetBlue flight 1784, traveling from Bogota, Colombia to OIA, resulting in the detainment of Carla Alvarado.
"Upon further screening, CBP officers found that under her uniform, Alvarado was wearing a black, sleeveless, form-fitting garment, which covered a majority of her upper and lower torso," an officer said.
Officers found a concealed package that contained multiple, hard, brown, oval-shaped pellets.
"The pellets were arranged in several rows and appeared to be fabricated to resemble chocolate candy," the complaint stated.
According to the complaint, Alvarado admitted to knowing that she was carrying something illegal and that she believed it to be illegal drugs.
Alvarado said she was given the package in Colombia, and was being paid $10,000 to smuggle the package of heroin, and pass it to Jorge Luis Alomar, an acquaintance in Orlando, the complaint stated.
Alvarado agreed to help agents with their investigation and complete the delivery, according to the complaint.
Alvarado and Alomar agreed to meet at a restaurant near the airport Saturday morning to hand off the drugs, the complaint said. When Alomar arrived at the restaurant and accepted the package, agents arrested him and Alvarado, according to officials.
Alvarado and Alomar were arrested on federal drug charges and made their first appearance in Orlando federal court on Monday.
