Judge rules Cocoa Beach red-light camera deal as illegal

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – A judge has ruled the deal that brought red-light cameras to Cocoa Beach is illegal because it set something comparable to a "ticket quota."

Currently, there are cameras at three Cocoa Beach intersections and the judge's ruling tossed out tickets for the three people who sued over their tickets.

Cocoa Beach city leaders have talked about getting rid of the red-light cameras, but decided last month to keep them in place until the contract with the American Traffic Solutions ran out.

Pulling out the cameras before the contract was up would have cost the city thousands of dollars.

The flexible payment plan, which was offered by the company reducing the price if not enough citations were issued, was deemed to be illegal by the judge.
