SANFORD, Fla. – A judge on Monday sentenced convicted murderer William Davis III to death after he repeatedly requested the death penalty at prior hearings.
Davis was found guilty in May of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and murdering 19-year-old Fabiana Malave at a car dealership in 2009. Davis, 33, met Malave at a Seminole County used car dealership where she worked. Officers say he abducted her, raped her, strangled her and then drove around with the teen's body in the trunk of his car.
Davis' numerous felony convictions contributed to his sentence, according to the judge.
Malave's family was very emotional, crying and yelling obscenities before leaving the courtroom after the judge sentenced Davis on Monday.
"I do feel pleased with the judgement because even though he's not gonna die anytime soon," said Malave's sister, Wendy Melez. "I'm OK with the fact that's he's going to live every single day knowing it's a countdown to his life."
Malave's brother was taken away in an ambulance after the sentencing. Family members say Malave's 31-year-old brother developed a heart condition after his sister's death.
