Kissimmee police chief announces resignation

Chief Lee Massie cites personal matters, family as reasons for resignation

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Kissimmee police chief resigned unexpectedly Thursday, but authorities said it's not related to seven officers in the department who have been investigated in the past year.

Lee Massie said he made the decision based on personal matters, primarily to maintain the focus of "family first."

"This was an extremely difficult decision," Massie said. "I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to each and every one of you for having allowed me the opportunity to serve alongside some of the most professional and committed individuals I have ever met."

Three officers were arrested in April for giving false testimony in a drug case. A corporal faced sexual battery charges in May.

A K-9 officer was suspended after his police dog was left in a patrol vehicle and died.

Another officer was arrested after he was accused of slamming a 13-year-old to the ground. One officer was charged with leaving the scene of a crash after a hit-and-run in the parking lot of a topless bar.

Massie was appointed chief in 2012. His resignation takes effect Aug. 9.
