Lake County man strangled wife, set house on fire, deputies say

Husband charged with 2nd-degree murder

SORRENTO, Fla. – Lake County deputies have charged a man with murder in the death of his wife after they say her body was found in their burned down Sorrento home.

Deputies say Ildefonso Valdez, 47, strangled his wife, Lizeth Mendivil-Valdez, 34, and set the house the two shared on fire on 31545 Vine St. on Wednesday.

Investigators say they found evidence of accelerants inside and on his shoes.

Valdez originally told detectives he was home the day of the fire and had an argument with his wife about her recent decision to get a divorce, but that when he left the home she was upset and crying.

Valdez was booked into the Lake County Jail on second-degree murder charges and is being held without bond.
